Olympic swimming coach David Marsh recently visited Shanghai American School to lead a workshop with SAS swimmers, sharing insight from a coaching career that has included four USA Olympic teams, athletes from six nations, more than 70 Olympians, and more than 25 Olympic medals. Speaking with students about the pathways to collegiate swimming and beyond, Marsh emphasized that young athletes need both inspiration and belief. Once swimmers understand what they are capable of, he said, they can begin to build a pathway toward reaching their full potential.

Marsh’s visit also connected to a broader mission: water safety. He spoke about his work with WeSwim, a drowning prevention organization founded by SAS junior Ian Z., and highlighted the responsibility swimmers have to advocate for safer water practices. Through WeSwim, Ian and Marsh hope to raise awareness and expand access to water safety education, swim lessons, and teacher training, helping more children stay safe around water in China and around the world.

For SAS swimmers, the workshop offered a glimpse into what it takes to compete at the next level while reminding students that the lessons learned in the pool extend far beyond race day. Whether pursuing collegiate swimming, personal growth, or service through water safety, Marsh encouraged students to see themselves as part of a global swimming community with the power to make a meaningful difference.
