For senior Duru Bozkurt, art is more than just a passion—it’s a way to connect, inspire, and give back. Whether through her own artwork, her leadership in Artivism Service Club, or her involvement in TEDx and Link Crew, Duru has used creativity as a tool to build community at SAS. Now, she’s ready to take her talents to the next level at Cornell University, where she will study architecture at the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning.

At SAS, you're known for blending art with community-building. Can you tell us more about that?

I think SAS has a really special art community, where students express themselves in so many different ways. For me, a big part of that has been starting Artivism Service Club, which uses creativity to amplify voices and give back—not just within SAS, but also in partnership with organizations in Shanghai and beyond.

I’ve also been involved in TEDx and Link Crew, where I get to bring creative perspectives to different spaces. But even outside of clubs, just being in art classes or collaborating with other students every day has helped me see how much creativity flows through our campus.

Why did you choose Cornell's architecture program?

Cornell caught my attention early in high school because of its strong community and beautiful campus, but what really stood out was its five-year Bachelor of Architecture program—it’s one of a kind. I knew that Cornell would give me the resources, environment, and mentorship to grow not just as an aspiring architect, but as a person.

What's a special memory that stands out from your time at SAS?

It’s not just one moment—it’s the little things. Working on art projects alongside other students, helping each other problem-solve, getting feedback, and celebrating our progress together. But beyond art, some of my favorite memories are walking the track during Movement, laughing uncontrollably with friends in random corners of campus, and the excitement of Inno Launch Days. It all adds up to a really special experience.

What advice would you give to juniors starting the college application process?

Plan ahead, do your research, but most importantly—enjoy the process. As cliché as it sounds, this is a time to find your voice and explore what excites you. There will be uncertainty but keep an open mind toward opportunities—you never know where they might lead.

Best of luck next year, Duru! Cornell is lucky to have you.
