SAS Earns 4 APAC Championship Titles
It was a record-breaking weekend as Shanghai American School athletes delivered an impressive showing at the Asia Pacific Activities Conference (APAC) championships. Competing across multiple host cities and here at home at SAS, students demonstrated competitive excellence alongside the teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship that define Eagle athletes. And judging by the medal count, airport security had plenty of extra scanning to do on the way home.
On the court in Beijing, our basketball teams turned in strong performances. For the second year in a row, the Puxi boys’ team captured the Super APAC championship as well as the Spirit of APAC honor, with three players named All-APAC. The Pudong girls took home a bronze medal and were also recognized with the Spirit of APAC honor.
Rainy conditions tested teams on our home rugby field, where perseverance and unity stood out as much as results. Pudong’s touch rugby teams earned Spirit of APAC awards for both boys and girls, with the boys securing silver. Puxi’s squads added to the medal count, with the girls finishing second and the boys earning third place. To top it off, several athletes also earned All-APAC honors.
In the pool, the Eagles produced one of the most memorable performances of the week. Pudong’s boys earned the team bronze medal, with the entire squad receiving the Spirit of APAC award. Puxi swimmers continued the domination, with the boys crowned APAC champions and the girls finishing second overall. The medals kept on coming for individual and relay events as well, with several swimmers winning gold, silver, and bronze. The record books were rewritten as Edward C. set a new APAC mark in the 50m freestyle, Calvin L. broke the 50m backstroke record, Kaideng Z. claimed the 100m breaststroke record, and Ryan C., Kevin C., James L., and Edward C. set a new record for the 200m freestyle relay. The mixed 4x50m medley relay team of Gabrielle S., Edward C., Reina K., and Kevin C. also set a new APAC record.
Precision and focus defined the action at the table tennis tables. Puxi swept the team titles, with both the boys' and girls' squads standing atop the podium. Bharath C. captured the boys' singles championship and partnered with Lucas C. to win doubles, while Aidan W. and Preston L. finished as runners-up. Pudong's boys' team earned second place in the team championships, and Christine Z. claimed silver in girls' singles and teamed up with Angela L. for bronze in doubles.
Across courts, fields, and pools, SAS athletes reminded us that true victory is about more than medals and records. It’s also about teamwork, character, and representing the Eagles with pride wherever they compete. Congratulations to all of our athletes and coaches on an outstanding APAC tournament!
