If you have walked past the Eagle Shop on Shanghai American School’s Puxi campus, you may have noticed a large red machine outside. No, it’s not a vending machine. It is something better: a student-led solution for recycling PE uniforms.

Spearheaded by Tammy H. ’27, Michael M. ’26, and Evelyn W. ’27 in partnership with the Environmental Stewardship Committee, the project began with a simple observation. Once students outgrow or finish their required PE classes, they often have little use for their old PE uniforms.

This machine offers a better ending. Students can deposit eligible items and earn points based on the weight of their donation. These points can then be used in the Eagle Shop for new gear. Through a special mini program, students can also track how much they have recycled and what new garments their donated items eventually become. Our community partner breaks down the recycled fabric, which is eventually transformed into new thread, then sewn into new items you can later find in the Eagle Shop.

The machine is not limited to just your old PE uniforms either; any clothing or bag comprised of at least 80% polyester material can be donated. If the trial is successful, the next phase of this project is a possible expansion to the Pudong campus later in the year.

So, if your old PE uniforms or quick-dry gear have been enjoying retirement for a little too long, bring them to the Eagle Shop and give them a new life and get a discount too.
