Shanghai American School fourth grader Tenzin H. has taken a remarkable step onto the world stage. She was cast as Young Cosette in the recent London West End production of Les Misérables during its Shanghai tour. From her first performances on the stages of SAS to a world-renowned international musical production, Tenzin’s journey reflects both talent and the confidence nurtured through her experiences at SAS.

When did you first become interested in singing and performing?

I first became interested in singing and performing when I was in first grade. My very first performance was at the SAS Carnival when I was six years old, and I was the youngest singer that day. I was a little nervous at first, but all my classmates and friends cheered so loudly for me. That was when I started gaining confidence on stage.

How did you learn about the opportunity to audition for Les Misérables?

During summer break, my mom saw an open call for child performers for Les Misérables. I had already been singing “Castle on the Cloud” since I was five years old, so we decided to submit a video of me singing.

What was the audition process like?

After I uploaded my video, about a month later I received an email inviting me to audition at the Shanghai Grand Theatre. After that round, only 24 children were selected to continue. Then there was a final round with just nine of us. We had to record another video that was sent to London, and the final decision was made by the directors and musical team. One month later, I got an email saying I was chosen to play Young Cosette. My whole family and I were so excited.

How has SAS helped you grow as a singer and performer?

At SAS, there are so many opportunities to perform. You do not have to worry about being perfect because you will always get applause here. Our music teachers choose really fun songs for us to rehearse, and anyone can audition for a solo if they want.

How did your classmates react when they found out you were in Les Misérables?

My classmates were really excited when they found out. Some of my friends even started practicing “Castle on the Cloud” themselves and became more motivated to sing. I also have a classmate who is an amazing dancer, and after seeing the show, she felt even more determined to follow her dream.

What advice would you give to other SAS students who dream of performing on big stages?

My advice is to be brave and give it a try. If there is an audition or opportunity, just go for it. You will definitely gain something from it. What SAS has taught me is to never think you are not good enough. Believe in yourself.

Congrats, Tenzin! We can’t wait to see you shine in your future performances!
