Artists In Residence Program

What is the Artists in Residence Program?

The Artists in Residence Program allows Shanghai American School to bring professional artists – from painters and dancers to trumpet players and actors- to our campuses to host special learning opportunities with our students.

The program was established as one of the School’s signature programs in 2016. Building off the success of individual faculty members and sometimes divisions hosting professional artists over the years, the School decided to raise additional funds to formalize and expand the program. Professional artists from abroad and greater China spend several days on our campus or campuses doing workshops, masterclasses, and often special performances to inspire our students and to enhance learning opportunities in the arts at SAS. These experiences are often cross-divisional and range from one, full-day experience to two-week experiences depending on the discipline and on the needs of the program that year.

How do we Fund the Program?

Initial funding for the program came from the Our Edge for Excellence campaigns in the 2015- 2016 and 2016-2017 school years. In 2017, SAS also launched its first Gala for the Arts as part of the Our Edge for Excellence campaign. Now that the Our Edge for Excellence campaigns have ended, the Gala for the Arts remains the primary way the school raises support for the Artists in Residence Program.

What is the Gala for the Arts?

The Gala is a special SAS event to celebrate our community and raise support for our Artists in Residence Program. The Gala is hosted every other school year and includes both campuses, alumni, and friends. The event is a black-tie evening featuring dinner, a live auction, and special performance of an Artist in Residence and SAS students. All proceeds from the event go to fueling the Artists in Residence Program on both campuses for the next two school years.

How does the Gala raise funds?

Sponsorships, ticket sales, gifts, and the proceeds from donated auction items all contribute to generating the needed funds to support the Artists in Residence program. It is a self-sustaining event, meaning that the school raises the needed funds to host the event and the proceeds are what go to support the Artists in Residence Program. The school does not use tuition or operating budget to pay for the Gala.

Who are some of the Artists?

The Artists in Residence program has supported 28 experiences for SAS students over the past three school years. All divisions on both campuses have been touched by this program and hosted artists in a variety of disciplines: 12 for Pudong campus, 15 for Puxi campus, and one Full School experience.
