TIME: 8:30am - 3:30pm

REGISTRATION DUE: Friday, September 28, 2018
LOCATION: Shanghai American School, Puxi Campus, 258 Jinfeng Road, Minhang District, Shanghai, China 201107
This session will provide the opportunity for teachers to see what a balanced approach to math looks like. Using recent research about the best approach to learn math, we will explore the different elements needed for a successful balanced approach to mathematics in the elementary classroom.
We will explore the progressions of basic skills from K-5, moving from a concrete approach, to a pictorial representation, to finally move into more abstract strategies to build fluency. On the second day, we will dive deep into developing high quality math assessments that allow students to not only provide right answers, but that allow them to problem solve, to model their thinking, and to communicate and reason with their solutions.
CATY ROMERO is an elementary Math coach at the Shanghai American School, Puxi campus and is passionate about learning and teaching mathematics through the lens of inquiry, modeling, reasoning and communicating. She has been essential in the development of the math curriculum at SAS using a variety of resources that allow students to do real mathematics, solving real problems.
She has presented at conferences in South America, and Asia. She recently co-facilitated an International Math Summit on “Developing High-quality Assessments” with Erma Anderson. She is currently part of the AERO Math Think Tank team from project AERO supported by the U.S. State Department’s Office of Overseas Schools. You can find her online on Twitter @catyrmath.
