SAS Middle School combines a rigorous academic curriculum with a wide range of supplementary student activities. The Middle School program is based on National Middle School Association principles, focusing on providing developmentally appropriate challenges in cognitive, social, emotional, physical and moral development.
All students participate in year-long courses in language arts, social studies, science, math, physical education, foreign languages (Spanish, French or Chinese) and music (Choir, Orchestra, Band or General Music). Students also attend courses in both art and health education. Students are divided into flexible and heterogeneous learning communities - there is no ability grouping. ESOL support is offered where needed.
Enrichment activities at Middle School include: annual cultural trips to different locations within China, daily focus on building literacy skills and a mission-driven advisory program. Students are also offered a variety of after-school programs. Students have a very popular year-round intramural sports program that emphasizes participation and sportsmanship while teaching game skills. As a member of China International Schools Sports Association (CISSA), SAS Middle School participates interscholastically in Touch Rugby, Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Hockey, Swimming, Cross Country, Table-tennis, Badminton, Track and Field.
