Marcel Gauthier received his Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College and holds a Master of Fine Arts in Poetry from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. Marcel’s wife, Sharol, also an accomplished educator, has taught high school English, and previously taught at Shanghai American School, Puxi campus. They have two daughters, Sophie and Colette. His interests include running, Korean martial arts, writing, and spending time with his family.
Mr. Gauthier has a deep and rich background in education that informs all his work. A teacher and administrator in independent schools in the United States for over 25 years, he has held a variety of leadership positions: academic department chair, accreditation coordinator, curriculum coordinator, and high school principal. Prior to joining SAS as the Deputy Head of School at the Puxi campus, he was Deputy Head of School at Waterford School in Salt Lake City, Utah.
As Deputy Superintendent of the Puxi Campus, he helped lead faculty, staff, and administrators across both campuses to assure the finest teaching and learning for our students. He worked closely with the former Head of School, Richard W. Mueller, and the Board and understands the SAS community and our School’s strengths and challenges.
Emmanuel Bonin joined SAS from Los Angeles, California where he was the Academic Director at the International School of Los Angeles. He began his educational career as a history teacher and moved into administrative roles, serving as Campus Director, Department Coordinator of Social Science, and Academic Director. He will serve as the primary instructional leader uniting efforts on both the Pudong and Puxi campuses, to improve teaching and learning, ensure a comprehensive, coherent and robust curriculum, and promote professional development in line with our current institutional priorities: building educational excellence, building community, and building for the future. Emmanuel is here with his partner, Marie, and her son Arno.
Emily Sargent-Beasley joined SAS from Israel where she was the Assistant Superintendent at the Walworth Barbour American International School. Beginning her career as a teacher and moving into administrative roles, serving as Curriculum Director, Division Director, and Assistant Superintendent, Emily has a strong understanding of what it takes to challenge ideas and unite people to do the reflective and meaningful work associated with sustainable change. Emily is here with her husband James, her son William, and daughter Brenneman.
George Entwistle joined SAS from the United States where he was the Superintendent at some of the most successful school districts in Maine as well as in the community of Belmont, Massachusetts. He was trained as a psychologist and was a highly experienced HR professional before earning his doctorate in educational leadership and shifting the focus of his career. His leadership style is “collaborative in a true sense” and he regards shared leadership as the key to continuous school improvement. George joined the community along with his wife Nancy, a speech language pathologist.
Jorgen Hoeven joined SAS during the 2013-14 school year from the Amman Baccalaureate School in Jordan, where he was bursar and director of administration. He holds an MBA from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario and a BSc from Concordia University in Montreal. He is a product of the international school world himself, having attended Cairo American College from 1969-1982, and working as business manager at the American Community School of Beirut. He is originally from the Netherlands, but spent much of his life in Canada, of which he is now a citizen.
Helene has been heading the Human Resources office at SAS since 2010 and brings over 10 years of corporate Human Resources experience in different industries throughout Europe and Asia.
Helene was educated at a Commercial College in Austria and has advanced professional training in Remuneration & Labor Law, Management, Leadership, and Recruitment. She and her husband Manfred have called Shanghai their home since 2008.
Alan Preis joined SAS from Atlanta, Georgia, where he was Director of Technology and 21st Century Learning at Atlanta International School. He has worked in educational technology in a variety of contexts from K-12 schools to university and has also done work in network and systems administration, software development, and database design. Alan studied Mathematics and Instructional and Curricular Studies, completing undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Maryland, Cornell University, and the University of Nevada. He has been an active member of the international school technology community, having been involved in the European Council of International Schools, the Council of International Schools, and the International Baccalaureate Organization. Alan’s interests include hiking, reading, and learning languages. His wife is Kate Preis, Pudong High School Vice Principal, and his kids Emily and Elliott attend SAS Pudong campus.
Kevin joined SAS from the world of advertising agencies. He was most recently the Executive Creative Director of BBDO South China, overseeing creative for the Hong Kong and Guangzhou offices of global agency network BBDO. Major clients included Wrigley, Visa, MetLife, Mars, and Mercedes-Benz. Kevin also worked in the network’s Shanghai and Chicago offices on clients such as SC Johnson, Starbucks, Time Out Shanghai, Bayer, and Paper Mate, among others.
For Kevin, SAS is a family business. His daughter is a senior, and his wife is the middle school librarian on our Puxi campus.
Alice Li-Arndt has been with SAS since 2013, overseeing the day to day operations of the Admission office. Her current role as Director now includes working closely with the leadership team in strategic enrollment management and community outreach. Prior to coming to SAS she worked in development for US not-for-profits and in training consultancy in Taiwan, Malaysia and China as well as an associate lecturer of pre-MBA courses in Germany. In total she brings over 25 years of corporate and international business experience to her role at SAS.
Alice is here with her husband and high school daughter. Her son graduated from SAS in June 2016.
