It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day happenings of Shanghai American School. After all, every day, our two beautiful campuses are filled with hundreds of engaging and inspiring lessons, conversations, and activities.
That’s why it’s important that the Board of Trustees offers a long-term perspective – one that charts and maintains the course of our school. Rather than focusing on day-to-day management, the Board selects, supports, and nurtures our Head of School, Marcel Gauthier.
There are 11 Board members – 6 elected, and 5 appointed. One of those positions is appointed by the U.S. Consul General – a reflection of our relationship and special history with the Consulate. The Board of Trustees represents both Pudong and Puxi campuses, which allows for consistent leadership across SAS.
The Board oversee policy and have a fiduciary responsibility to provide sound financial management of the school. Perhaps the most visible evidence of their support and commitment is in the ever-improving facilities. The most recent eamples include our sun-drenched Early Childhood Center and gorgeous Performing Arts Center in Pudong, and our soaring “cathedral of 21st century learning,” the Center for Inquiry & Design in Puxi.
Parents are encouraged to get involved with the Board and helping to make a positive difference at SAS by joining one of the Board subcommittees. We have parent representation on the Elections, Facilities, Finance, and Audit committees.
