SAS is an independent, non-profit coeducational day school that is sponsored by the U.S. Consulate in Shanghai. It is owned and managed by the SAS Association of Parents. The parents or guardians of every student in the school are automatically members of the Association. A Board of Directors is elected by the parents to hire the superintendent and to aid the administration in ensuring a world-class education for every student.

Each month the Board meets to discuss various issues that arise throughout the year. The ultimate goal is to develop policies through which these issues can be effectively addressed by the administration. Some issues concern educational operations, some have to do with facilities, others with finance, and so on. Three board committees have been established to research the issues and prepare policy recommendations. One board member serves as the chair and a second serves as a member of each committee and is assisted by a representative from the school administration. [more - expand]
