Middle School Art Program at SAS

The Arts Program for Middle School at Shanghai American School is designed to help students develop and enhance their ability to create art, gain an understanding of aesthetics and expand their knowledge of art history and art appreciation. Projects are sequentially designed to develop individual perceptions of reality, as well as imagination, and to foster creativity, self-expression and build self-esteem.
During their three years of middle school, students will experience different aspects of the artistic media of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media and ceramics.
The focus in the Middle School program is on the development of creative thinking and expression. Students keep a personal journal of written and visual entries, including self-assessment and reflections upon their artistic process and their development as learners in art. Past and present artists and art movements are introduced, and China’s rich art heritage is used as a resources and inspiration.
