Elementary Art Programs at SAS

The elementary art program at Shanghai American School is designed to help students form a developmentally appropriate understanding of art. Lessons focus on helping students develop a foundation of knowledge about different art tools, materials, and techniques.

During their time at SAS students will have the opportunity to create paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints. Through these activities students will develop and enhance their artistic skills, form a beginning art vocabulary, and expand their knowledge of artists and art movements.

Projects are sequentially designed to build upon knowledge gained during previous years of study as well as to develop their imagination, creativity, problem solving skills and to build self-confidence.
Our goal is to foster a love and appreciation for the visual arts in our young students.  The primary focus of the art program is to teach students that art is for everyone. An inclusive and supportive classroom environment helps to make this a reality.

Social, historical and cultural awareness is also emphasized through the art program.  We take the time to discuss the issues that influence our work on a personal level and as part of the global community. In this way, children learn to appreciate and value the contributions of their peers and other cultures.

Students are assessed according to a rubric based on the standards. The assessment reflects their effort, participation, ability to follow instructions, their creative development of ideas and their skills.
